Centuries ago, at the beginning of the Obama Administration, we were told that the "obscene" bonuses of AIG executives should be taxed away, with special taxes that amounted to bills of attainder. This is not the first time we've seen specific industries targeted with massive taxes because they were deemed immoral. The outstanding example is the tobacco industry, which the government uses as a trained vampire, sending it forth to suck tax revenue from the lungs of smokers.

Personally, I can't get enough of Johnny Depp acting effeminate. "Magnificent Mile Lights Festival" (6 p.m., WLS-Channel 7): Janet Davies, Hosea Sanders, Alan Krashesky and Deborah Roberts host. "How the Grinch Stole Christmas" (7 p.m., TBS): How did he do it, again?

The New Century Chamber Orchestra's latest program is a treat. No weak spots, just solid inspiration: superb playing by the string orchestra, smart selection of repertory, a night of music-making that follows a clear arc, unfolding like chapters in a book that you don't want to put down. The San Francisco-based orchestra has been around since 1992, a reliably excellent group.

When Pamela Stoner crossed the threshold to Rock Ford, she felt like she was coming home. Now, she wishes more people would visit her there. Rock Ford Plantation, a 177-acre site south of Lancaster, was home to Gen. Edward Hand — a physician, politician, farmer and horticulturist — during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

A sking an atheist to review William Dalrymple's Nine Lives is like sending a vegan to check out a beefsteak restaurant. I am simply not on the same wavelength. So, instead of finding Dalrymple's journey through nine disjointed lives spiritually uplifting, I am appalled at the tragic denial of life-assertion that most of these lives represent.

Scored for 23 string players, this work is a major test for any instrumental ensemble. It has hints of orchestral writing - there are passages in which the musicians join forces to produce a big, stirring chordal texture - but for the most part it's a feat of individuation, nearly two dozen solo voices deep in conversation. The subject is a lament for German culture, which in 1945 had clearly soiled itself almost beyond any hope of redemption.

HE CALLED himself "Thunder Eagle", wore feathers in his hair and promised that his "psychic surgery" would cure her breast cancer. Helen* contacted the man, who claimed to be a Sioux Lakota Indian shaman, after conventional medicine failed. Weighing just 44 kilograms, her mind fogged by pain-killing medication, she handed over more than $2000 for nine sessions with him.

Just over a week ago we had our first list of must-see episodes of the Twilight Zone – the excellent show celebrating its fiftieth anniversary this year. I was so inspired that I began to download the whole set of episodes. I am, therefore, pleased that a second list of must-see episodes has arrived in my inbox.
